I AM directed by the Board of Trade to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 22nd ultimo on the subject of the rights of British subjects in connection with the provisions of the Chinese Treaties with Japan and the United States relating to copyright.
In reply, I am to state that the Board are of opinion that British subjects are clearly entitled to claim the benefits of the provisions referred to (Articles V and XI of the Treaties with Japan and the United States respectively), in virtue of Article LIV of the Treaty of Tien-tsin, which is maintained in force by paragraph 3 of Article XV of the Treaty of 1902 between China and the United Kingdom.
